OSU Police offer tips to prevent theft

The OSU Division of Police would like to remind students, faculty and staff that a spike in criminal activities i.e. theft of property and theft from autos usually accompany the start of fall quarter. Criminals are opportunists and will often steal items that are left in plain view or unattended. By roaming area parking lots and streets, and public areas criminals can find numerous opportunities to steal laptops, cell phones, bicycles and even purses or wallets. For more information, visit ps.ohio-state.edu or call 292-2121. Police are offering the following tips to help keep you from becoming the next victim:

  • Get into the habit of securing valuables while away from your vehicle. This will reduce the opportunities available for criminals and reduce your chances of becoming a victim.
  • When possible, take your valuables with you. Even if you are stepping away from the area for a short time.
  • Lock your doors and windows at home.
  • Register your bicycle with the OSU Division of Police.
  • Keep track of serial numbers to expensive items and make sure to mark your property for identification.
  • Report any suspicious activities to the police immediately.
